Enrika Diaz - Business Management (Canada)

Why did you choose to complete an Internship?

I chose to complete an internship because I strongly believe that it will give me that trial period to work and gain professional experience and exposure in the Australian workplace. I know that an Internship will also help me further develop my business and administrative skills while building a platform for critical connections in the business industry. Completing an Internship also allowed me to learn how a company works and explore various business tasks in different departments.

What have you learned the most during your internship?

I had my internship at an organisation that hosts business events and conferences. During my internship, I learned much about event task management and team collaboration. I learned that having the ability to communicate your thoughts and ideas effectively is critical to collaborating with people in your work successfully. In addition, I learned how to participate in and organise a major event and understand what alternatives are available.

What benefits do you feel Australian Internships contributed to your internship?

Australian Internships paved the way for me to experience the work culture in Australia. Throughout my 12-week internship program, Australian Internships kept regular weekly check-ins to ensure I didn't have any issues with my placement and was comfortable with my workplace environment. The Australian Internships' weekly learning plan structure has helped me know my skills better. This allowed me to reflect on my experience and put into words all the tasks I've accomplished, which I know will definitely benefit me in resume building.

What advice would you give future interns regarding internships?

My advice to future interns is to try to be consistent in performing at your best and take this experience as an excellent opportunity to not only build your skills but also to build professional relationships in your chosen career. Always be curious, and don't be afraid to ask questions --- if you have to... ask a lot of questions. It's important to remember that you're interning to learn, so have an open mind. Be receptive to tasks even if they're outside of your comfort zone or expertise. Be proactive and take the initiative to take on tasks because it will increase your chances of learning during your internship.

What do you enjoy most about Australia?

I live in Melbourne, and in the 4 months I've been here, I have enjoyed exploring the extensive selection of dining options. There's literally a place to eat for all budgets on every corner and laneway in the Central Business District (CBD). I also enjoy going on hikes while exploring its amazing coastal trails and going on road trips to Melbourne's hiking gems and beaches.
