What do you enjoy most about Australia?

As I am living on the Gold Coast which is famous for its stunning beaches, vibrant atmosphere, and wide range of attractions. The Gold Coast boasts beautiful sandy beaches that stretch for miles along the coastline. I live in  Surfers Paradise which offers a lively atmosphere, high-rise buildings, shopping precincts, dining options, and entertainment venues. The area is popular for its nightlife, markets, and events.

I chose Australia as it is a culturally diverse country where everyone is treated equally. I am fortunate that this opportunity I got in the hospitality industry has helped me become more independent and gain theoretical and practical skills

One of the challenges I have faced is the weather. It’s very unpredictable, which took me a while to get used to. The Australian accent is also a big challenge for me. I could not communicate well with customers at the beginning. Although there were a few obstacles, I have learned a lot through this internship. I was instructed with all the information about drink and food menu, table handling and order taking. I also luckily joined such an energetic and encouraging team, who always helped me in every step of my job.

From the start, Australian Internships has provided me with all essential information and guidance about required documents in Australia, such as TFN number, RSA course, opening a bank account, etc. I really appreciated their support. This internship has been a great experience for me.

The biggest challenge I faced was finding accommodation in Australia. However, Australian Internships provided me with many websites and groups on Facebook, where I could find the right accommodation for myself within the right budget.

I’m interning in a hotel chain, which is the perfect place for practical learning. Working in an extensive organisation with people from different cultural backgrounds has allowed me to sharpen my soft skills by communicating with customers. Moreover, I am really glad that my team is cooperative and they create a really lively atmosphere.

As mentioned before, the fact that people have diverse backgrounds has enabled me to communicate efficiently in English and serve the needs of our guests in a much better way.

For the people who wish to explore more in the F&B sector and would love to intern in Australia, which I have been offered, it's an amazing journey to challenge yourselves with new experiences. It has been a few months since I started working in this host organisation, and I bet everyone who loves to cook and meet new people would like this workplace. Thus, my training process is positively influenced by this environment because your queries are resolved quickly, and your skills will improve as everyone motivates you to do your best.

What hospitality skills have you developed?

In the hospitality industry, you never get an end to learning. Thus, I also improved many skills through this hospitality internship program, including Communication, Behavioural and Chef skills.

What advice would you give future interns regarding internships?

I would advise the interns that are coming in future, that always be the person they are and everybody gonna love them. Always try to be on a learning side rather than showing yourself overconfident, be happy, and be safe.

I lodged my visa in 2020, but suddenly after there was COVID-19 worldwide that caused my internship to delay more than 2 years. But the positive thing is that the people at AI are always supportive. Special thanks to Ms. Diana and Ms. Joy for giving me all of their support in every aspect.

What do you enjoy most about Australia?

Literally everything, the people, culture, food, nature, weather, economy. And many positive things can't be explained and can just be felt.

Australia is one of the most ideal places for tourists and for people who want to experience other cultures by enhancing their skills and at the same time meeting different nationalities at work.

What challenges have you faced and how has AI contributed to softening your internship experience abroad?

I have waited for this application for more than 2 years. AI representatives are so consistent in giving updates to their applicants overseas, and that is the main reason why I choose AI as my internship partner.

How do you define your work environment and how has it influenced your training process? 

Working with different cultures on an Island helps me boost my understanding of other people and how to interact with each one of them. The training process was indeed great, it helped me to understand, learn and broaden my knowledge, skills and expertise about Food and Beverage.

What hospitality skills have you developed?

Flexibility, Time Management, Attention to detail, Communication, and lastly Teamwork, are the most important hospitality skills I have learned while working. I’ve been flexible with my time, given time management for work and leisure, paying attention to every detail during events or functions to cater, communicating with each team to make work easier, and lastly working as a team because without it there is no rhyme in work.

Work hard, save money, enhance yourself, socialize with other cultures, and be the best person you dreamed of.

Living on an Island, I haven't toured around Australia, but so far on Fraser Island, Lake Mckenzie is one of the most beautiful lakes I have encountered in the world.

How do you define your work environment and how has it influenced your training process?

My work team is pleasing and helpful. I am learning new skills there, and I am also getting a chance to improve my lifestyle. I work in a fine-dining restaurant, and all the recipes are good.

What hospitality skills have you developed?

I am getting a chance to learn new skills at my job. Our head chef Sourabh Sanam has assisted me well, and my skill development is on the right track under his observation.

The best advice is to experience Australian culture as much as you can. You are lucky to be part of this program.

The visa process took longer than expected. but, at last, it was easy.

Why did you choose to complete an internship in Australia? 

When I was in college, I was very bad at my studies and many times I wanted to give up after seeing the subjects I failed. The only sentence I remember and will never forget was that people thought I should go abroad for a job. That sentence was spoken and it came to my mind “how can I do it as I am not smart in my studies?” My father left us from this world and after that, I decided that I would do anything to fulfilling my father's dream. Then I studied hard and passed in important subjects. My mother supported me a lot taking me towards my dream I also met good friends along the way. Those who guided me a lot to bring me here to Australia are some of those who I consider my inspiration to pursue my dream. Friends had come to Australia before me and seeing their achievements, I also thought that I should go to Australia and get a job. Australia internships is the best internship provider, through their hospitality program I’ve gained knowledge and developed my skills. I'm feeling blessed to live in Australia. 

What challenges have you faced since you decided to do an internship in Australia?

Before I came to Australia, I had to face a lot of challenges, I had gone through the process before covid but it took me three years to come here. By that time I didn't know what to do, as my father left and all the responsibilities of the house fell on me. Whether I was doing small or big jobs to meet the needs of the house, there was a positive side in my mind that said that takes time for good things to happen, so I stuck to one decision and waited for Australia’s borders to reopen. It took time to get here, but now I am happy and my mom is very proud of me.

How do you define your work environment and how has it influenced your training process?

To be honest, the work is very hard, I'm still trying to learn and understand because it's very different from my previous job, but I'm also happy that I'm working with an executive chef so I can learn a lot from him.

I developed many skills regarding my work like work ethics, hygiene, food service, management, food process, responsibility etc.

What advice would you give future interns regarding internships?

“As my field of interest in Hospitality is Culinary, I’m intrigued by how customer satisfaction is achieved through a rigorous process of preparing delicious dishes with attention and care.

 As far as I knew, Australia always had great opportunities to grow as a Chef. After the impact of COVID-19 and hospitality staff shortages, I saw an opportunity to come to Australia to develop my skills in the industry and gain international experience, interacting with people from all over the globe.”

At first, studying in Australia was my childhood dream, because when I was too young, my parents didn't allow me to go far away. Then later, thanks to Australian Internships, I got the opportunity to come to Australia to do an Internship, which made my dream come true. Not only that, I believe that doing an Internship in Australia could give me long-term benefits for my career growth and also my interpersonal skills.

What challenges have you faced and how has AI contributed to softening your internship experience abroad?

My challenge was when COVID happened in 2020. So many rules, regulations, and restrictions applied when I was about to proceed with my visa to Australia, and then I got informed that the program must be postponed, while had no idea how long it got postponed. By that time I was losing hope, I thought I had missed the opportunities, but AI kept giving me an update regarding the process and the restriction update, which gave me a small hope at that time. Suddenly by the end of 2021, I got informed by AI that they would re-process my application as the border will be opened soon. And then, here I am! I would send my appreciation to JOY, my Internship Program Supervisor, who has been there for me since 2019, the beginning of my long journey. Thank you so much.

How do you define your work environment and how has it influenced your training process?

When I arrived, it was a very busy season and the hotel was struggling with short of staff after the pandemic. Since everyone was pretty busy, there was no time to get proper training, everything should be learnt and be done at a fast pace. It was hard at first time, but thankfully, I got a really supportive manager, Jerome. He was the one who always pushed me beyond my limit. Short of staff, every staff worked long hours, so at that time, I also learnt a lot about strong teamwork. I could see myself growing so much in just one year. My confidence and the ability to manage my emotions and stress in a fast-paced environment made myself amazed. I am proud of today’s Octa that I have come this far and I could finish my training with satisfaction.

What hospitality skills have you developed?

Restaurant Management, Handling Guest Dietaries, Handling Guest Complaints, Service Recovery, and Wine pairing. Bar management, Mixing Drinks. Banquet set up, banquet bar. Staff management. Guest satisfactory.

What advice would you give future interns regarding internships?

The future interns at least should show that they are willing to learn and please be respectful to all the staff, not only in Food and Beverage department, because it will be really helpful for your training.

Travelling, Australian Wine, Gin, Aboriginal Culture and Art (Because I am in NT), and Golf!

“I am very happy that I have learned a lot from my chefs. Still there are a lot of things to learn. It has been almost 6 months since I have started to work at Kingfisher Bay Resort. It was hard for me in the beginning but as the days passed by, I started to spend more time with chefs and learn different techniques and concepts of cooking. 1 - Why did you choose to complete an Internship?

An internship abroad is one of the most valuable opportunities that I have to take. It opens new chances for me to expand my skills and network, and also develop my life skills such as confidence, communication and organisation.

1. Why did you choose to complete an Internship?

An internship is a great way to improve my skills and polish my knowledge. Completing my internship in a  country like Australia seemed to be exciting and I swear it is. It has been more than two months and I’m enjoying it so well, and when it comes to learning, I prefer a happy learning environment. I have got the place to communicate and learn along with my mates. An internship not only feeds you with knowledge and development but it also helps in nourishing your confidence. Today I’m more than satisfied with my internship program.

2. What have you learned the most during your internship?

During these months I have been supportively looking after our lobby bar as a bar attendant and bartender where I have been more involved in making cocktails, service of alcohol, service of wine and food. So it is a kind of outlet where I see myself as a multi-tasking. I have been concerned about my conversations with my guests and I have seen an improvement in me. I am also responsible for opening and closing of the Dundee Arms (pub) sometimes.

3. What benefits do you feel AI contributed to your internship and time in Australia?

AI has been my backbone I must say. While I applied for the program and since then I did not look back to anything that could bother me at all. From the very beginning of my program, I have been receiving emails and calls in every time I needed their guidance. AI did every possible help they could offer me. And I'm so glad and thankful to everyone who helped me get a better internship program here in Australia.

4. What advice would you give future interns?

5. What did you enjoy the most in Australia?

 Most? Everything here in Australia is amazing and beautiful. I love the people around me. They always seem to be happy and that makes you smile anyway. If you’re in Australia it is sure that your days will be happier and nights adventurous. That’s all I have to say. It is one of the most beautiful places I have seen.

I came to Australia in February 2016 from the Philippines. In the beginning, I was actually disappointed for not being placed in the same company as my friends did. I was afraid I would not enjoy would be alone. I talked to my Internship Program Supervisor Caroline which help me to overcome and tell me to stay in the company for a while. Which is actually the best decision that I’ve made so far.

After 5 months of working, I started to feel being happy and able to work and see how amazing the people around me. I was having so much fun and I travel around Australia with my friends how good is that. This program gives me almost everything, a workplace that allows me to grow professionally, a place that helps me to become a better person and third is to meet new friends that I will never forget in my entire life. I become a new person in just a year. I’m so proud of myself having to conquer my fear. I’m so sad that my program is about to finish. However, It means a new adventure.
